HUNDREDS of friends, family and fellow pupils turned out in memory of 14-year-old Kiera Beagle, who died following a school sports lesson.

Many in tears, friends hugged one another at the special tribute event at Calderheard High School in Shotts last night, exactly one week after Kiera died.

More than 500 people turned up for the event, including Kiera's grandmother Elaine Black who was comforted by relatives.

Headteacher John Robertson paid tribute to the S2 pupil before two of Kiera's friends and some family members read poems and paid tribute to a "kind friend and a great person."

Candles were also lit before a host of purple balloons was released into the sky.

It is understood a cherry blossom is to be planted in school grounds, with a memorial bench.

Scores of floral tributes are still being placed at the school, where a purple heart banner and a photo of Kiera hangs on the fence, with a 'fly high' message.

Elaine Black, who Kiera lived with, previously thanked the staff at the school "who gave our lovely Kiera a fighting chance."

She also thanked the police, ambulance and hospital staff for their professionalism and kind support. Our thoughts are with Kiera’s many friends, we know how sad they will be at this devastating news.”

Since her death, scores of people have changed their Facebook profiles to purple hearts in tribute to her and a gofundme page for Kiera’s family has smashed its £3,000 target.

The page has now closed, with donations reaching £4,720. James Allan, who created the page, said all the messages would be printed out on a card for the family. He thanked everyone for their "kind donations and messages."
