COPS have been pictured with the air weapons members of the public have handed in as part of a surrender campaign.

A spare cell at Kirkintilloch Police Office has filled up with more than 600 unwanted air weapons which have been handed in as part of Police Scotland’s Air Weapons surrender campaign.

Police Scotland say a total of 6,000 unwanted air weapons have been handed in across the country during the first two weeks of the campaign.

Chief Inspector Craig Smith said: “This has been an excellent response with more than 600 weapons being surrendered.

"The end of the campaign is fast approaching and anyone who has a weapon which they no longer wish to keep or licence should hand it in to police before Sunday, June 12.

"You can surrender any unwanted weapons at Kirkintilloch Police Office, London Road Police Office and Helen Street Police Office.”

Full details of the surrender campaign can be found on the Police Scotland website at:

Anyone wishing to retain an air weapon after December 31 is required to apply for a licence, or face prosecution with penalties of a fine or up to two years imprisonment.

The cost has yet to be decided by ministers but the British Association of Shooting and Conservation has said it expects it to be less than the £79.50 shotgun licence.
