YOUNG patients were invited to a fun-filled party as Glasgow’s new children’s hospital celebrated its first birthday.

A new roof top playground was opened at the Royal Hospital for Children to mark the occasion.

To mark the anniversary, paediatric staff and volunteers from Glasgow Children’s Hospital Charity helped create a party atmosphere for young patients with clowns and live music.

Two new playparks were opened by the charity’s young Ambassador – and Young Scot of The Year – Jenny Cook, 13, from East Kilbride, who had the honour of cutting the ribbon.

Glasgow Times:

Jenny has battled inflammatory bowel disease since she was a tot and undergone major surgery at the age of five, and has earned plaudits from both the Prime Minister and Scotland’s First Minister for her astonishing fundraising efforts.

Kevin Hill, Director in charge of the children’s hospital said: “ We are delighted that Jenny could join us today to officially open our new play parks.

“Jenny is a remarkable young girl who has overcome her own illness to raise an amazing amount of money to support other children with illness.

“I would also like to thank the Glasgow Children’s Hospital Charity who contributed £17,000 of enhancements to the roof garden funded by donors and supporters including the Rangers Charity Foundation and the Chloe McIntyre Memorial Fund.”

The roof top garden is on level 3 of the hospital and the ground level play park is situated next to the main entrance to the children’s hospital.

For those patients too unwell to leave their beds a roaming party took the celebrations to them and there was cup cakes and juice for everyone.

Since its opening, the hospital has treated more than 30,000 inpatients and some 103,000 outpatients have attended. A further 55,000 children have attended the hospital’s emergency department.
