HUNDREDS of cyclists showed their pedal at the Wee Jaunt Glasgow bike ride.

At the start line were three generations of the McInally family, Richard, 59, John , 35, and six-year-old Finlay, plus father and son duo Gary and Callum Hart.

The Wee Jaunt saw people of all ages pedal their way round the five mile traffic free route, starting in Glasgow Green and heading Clydeside along to Richmond Park before finishing back at the Green to soak up entertainment at the event village.

The Wee Jaunt is part of Scotland’s biggest bike event, Pedal for Scotland, which will see more than 10,000 people take to two wheels across six rides later this summer. Now in its 18th year, Pedal for Scotland rides include the 50 mile Classic Challenge from Glasgow to Edinburgh, and the 110 mile Big Belter, which takes a more challenging route through the Southern Uplands.

Many participants were raising money for children and young people affected by poverty by supporting the event’s charity partner, The STV Children’s Appeal.

Humza Yousaf, Minister for Transport and the Islands said, “The Wee Jaunts are an ideal way for families to take part in a fun activity together and the Scottish Government are delighted to support this.

“Mass participation rides like this are a fantastic way of encouraging everyone, regardless of age, to get excited about cycling and in doing so improve their health and well-being. Pedal for Scotland is for young and old alike, I hope those taking part have a great time with their families and friends, and continue to cycle as an everyday part of their lives."

Nathan Kaczmarski, of event organiser Cycling Scotland, said, “Cycling is something for all ages and abilities. Having over 600 people – from the age of 1 to 78 – taking part in the Wee Jaunt at Glasgow Green today is just brilliant. Whether travelling to work, school or the shops, going by bike can be very sociable and all those here today have enjoyed time spent with friends and family, taking in a few miles on the bike and feeling healthier for it. Many people cycling here today are also riding for our official charity partner, the STV Children’s Appeal, raising funds for children in Scotland living in poverty.”

All Pedal for Scotland events are organised by Cycling Scotland with funding from Transport Scotland and with support from partners and sponsors.
