Scots favourites Oor Wullie and Tunnock's Tea Cakes have teamed up for a special art project.

A unique sculpture of the comic strip character wrapped from head to toe in tinfoil wrappers from the sweet treat visited the Tunnock's factory in Uddingston, South Lanarkshire, today.

The statue will later go on display along with 49 others in Dundee for 10 weeks as part of a mass public participation art event in the city.

Organised by The ARCHIE Foundation, Wild in Art and DC Thomson, the Oor Willie Bucket Trail aims to raise money to help create a brand new twin operating theatre and paediatric surgical suite for the Tayside Children's Hospital at Ninewells.

Glasgow Times:

At the end of the trail in September, all the sculptures will be sold at a special auction in Dundee, with proceeds going to the appeal.

The impressive statue was created by Fife artist Robert Mach, painstakingly decorated in hundreds of gold-leaf-like Tunnock's wrappers.

Boyd Tunnock, managing director of Tunnock's, said: ""Oor Wullie has long been one of the nation's favourites and we like to think that we're in the same category.

"We are very happy to support this appeal."

Robert said: "I am delighted to be working on this sculpture for Tunnock's and being part of such a fantastic public art event. I'm sure Teacake Wullie will be a popular stop on the Bucket Trail through the summer."

Fergus Loudon, Sales Director at Tunnock's said: "All of us at Tunnock's are very pleased to support The ARCHIE Foundation's Tayside Appeal. Oor Wullie is a national treasure and who better to bring this wonderful appeal to fruition."
