Former SNP MP Natalie McGarry has reportedly contacted police after receiving death threats online.

The MP for Glasgow East is believed to have received the threats, which were sent by email and posted to her Twitter and Facebook pages, following a trip to Turkey to protest against the treatment of the Kurds.

It has been reported that officers offered the MP safety advice during a visit to her constituency office in Shettleston.

Ms McGarry was detained by Turkish security forces during her visit to Turkey in February.

The MP's lawyer said that she was briefly held at a checkpoint for using her phone to record the sound of 'bombs falling' on a Kurdish area in Turkey.

Ms McGarry is currently facing a second police probe into alleged financial discrepancies.

The backbencher strenuously denied any wrongdoing.

A Met Police inquiry into the hatemail found that it had been sent from overseas.

A spokesperson said Ms McGarry had been informed and no further action would be taken.
