A public meeting will be held this week into plans to develop a derelict site in the West End for new housing.

Mactaggart and Mickel Homes, which is one of Scotland’s largest housebuilders, wants to build 132 flats on a site in Dorchester Avenue which has lain empty for a number of years.

In 2005, the company received planning permission to build 86 townhouses and duplex apartments on the land but work never started.

The firm says it has been closely monitoring the housing market in Glasgow and believes the new plan to build studio, one and two bedroom flats will meet the needs of buyers.

They will be in three, seven and eight storey blocks with parking and bicycle storage for every home as well as shared green space and a woodland area.

The developer has told the community council the new development will provide a positive use for a site which has lain empty for years.

It will also meet the growing demand for first time buyers and young professionals in the city, will include more green space and will be sustainable and close to local amenities.

The public meeting will be held on Thursday evening in Kelvindale Bowling Club.

Ken Windsor, secretary of Kelvindale community council, said: “It is not a protest meeting as we are not in conflict with the developer. It is purely a fact finding meeting.

“We want to work with the developer to find the best way for this development to go ahead.”

Three years ago, Mactaggart and Mikel agreed to lease the land to the local community on an annual lease under the city council’s Stalled Spaces scheme.

The plan was to turn it into a bike trail for young people until the financial market improved.

Mr Windsor said: “It was supposed to be used as an adventure playground for cyclists but didn’t really take off.

“Mine workings were discovered on one side of the site which had to be capped and the place has been derelict for quite a time.

“It would be in everyone’s interests to have something there rather than just a derelict site.”
