WORK has started at Scotstoun Stadium ahead of a £750,000 redevelopment which will result in an all-weather synthetic pitch as well as well as other improvements.

The existing grass pitch at the sports complex has been badly affected by heavy rainfall during recent winters making it unplayable for long periods.

During the last rugby season, Glasgow Warriors were unable to play three matches at Scotstoun and a fourth game was postponed while Victoria Park of Glasgow Athletics Club had limited use because of the weather.

Groundwork has started to install the new artificial pitch and to provide an internationally approved throw area for training and events.

The city council is also preparing to build a temporary grandstand at Scotstoun to meet spectator demand.

As part of the process, a series of community information events will be held at the stadium. The first will take place on Thursday at 7pm and will be followed by public meetings on July 26 and August 17 between 7-9pm.

A Glasgow Life spokesman said: “These redevelopment plans will ensure Scotstoun Stadium retains its place as a centre of sporting excellence for years to come.

“This investment will deliver significant improvements which meet the highest standards set by both World Rugby and the International Association of Athletics Federations securing a lasting legacy for future generations.”

Scotstoun was officially re-opened by Princess Anne in 2010 following an £18m upgrade which delivered a state-of-the-art multi-sports facility for the people of the city and west central Scotland. It was funded by the council and sportscotland.

Two new all-seater stands with a capacity of 5000 were built and an outdoor, 400m running track, warm-up track and strength and conditioning sites delivered as part of the project.
