A historic West End garage which has been at the centre of a planning row for years is to be turned into restaurants and a gym.

The A-listed Art Deco garage in Vinicombe Street, which is owned by motoring tycoon Arnold Clark, is the oldest surviving motor garage in Glasgow and possibly the UK.

A statement from the car dealer says it has now been decided a multi-million pound redevelopment of the building will start later this year but that the imposing facade will be retained.

It adds: “Our historical Vinicombe Street site will be redeveloped for the benefit and enjoyment of the local community. This decision has been reached after much careful consideration and close consultation with many interested parties.

“We have taken many years to arrive a decision we feel benefits the area in terms of adding more high-end amenities to the West End.”

The scheme will involve a mix of “premium” restaurants run by both national and local operations, car parking, a gym and community space.

The statement adds: “Given the low level of objection to the development we feel this outcome demonstrates how conservation and community development can work hand in hand.

“We are investing a large sum on money in the conservation of the facade and of the other significant architectural features of the building.

“This multi-million pound investment will secure the legacy of this historic building for future generations.

“We feel this mixed development adds to the fabric of the West End and complements the pedestrianisation of Vinicombe Street by adding new amenities and services to the area.”

Around a decade ago, local residents launched the Save the Botanic Gardens campaign when it was feared the garage would be partially destroyed.

In October 2007 Arnold Clark announced it was withdrawing the application to demolish the garage saying public opposition had played a large part in the decision.
