Coronation Street actress Paula Lane has said her character’s forthcoming death scene will be a first in the world of soap.

The Corrie favourite has played Kylie Platt since 2010 and her final episodes will be broadcast in the week beginning July 11.

Paula spoke about the “gut-wrenching” decision to kill off Kylie ahead of her departure from the long-running ITV show.

She said: “I’m not just saying this because I’m involved, but I don’t think I’ve ever read an ending like it. It’s almost not Corrie, if you know what I mean, it’s very different.”

She continued: “It’s something that’s never been done in soap before and I think the audience are going to get a real sense of shock and surprise.”

During Kylie’s six years on the cobbles, the troubled mother has been at the centre of some high profile storylines.

In 2015 during a live episode of Coronation Street, she murdered evil Callum Logan (Sean Ward) to stop him from harming her sister-in-law Sarah Platt (Tina O’Brien).

The Platts buried him under their house, but a guilt-ridden Kylie has buckled under the pressure. With the late Tony Stewart (Terence Maynard) in the frame for Callum’s death, Kylie’s husband David (Jack P Shepherd) believes they are all home and dry.

But Kylie remains uncomfortable about letting an innocent dead man take the blame for a crime she committed. She suggests the family leave Weatherfield and put the events of the past year behind them.

But their excitement and future plans are cut short by Kylie’s unexpected death.

Paula, 30, said: “You don’t get to have that kind of exit every day and people will really remember it so I am chuffed to pieces. I want it to be that I leave the audience wanting more.”

The Yorkshire-born actress was originally offered a six-month contract as the half-sister of Becky McDonald, played by Happy Valley star Katherine Kelly. But six months turned into six years and Paula had concerns about being typecast.

She admitted that her mother is “devastated” about the sad ending for Kylie and David.

“It is heartbreaking really because I could have seen them last a lifetime together.”

Asked how Jack reacted when she told him about her decision to leave, Paula referenced their partnership. “It is hard when you have someone you have worked with for six years turn round and say, ‘I am going and I won’t ever be coming back’.”

On the subject of her favourite storyline, she said they had all been “pretty full-on” but the live episode was a high point.

“I loved spending time with Katherine Kelly and being in her shadow kind of thing when I started at Corrie,” Paula stated.

She added: “The live was epic. I have never felt exhaustion like it.”

Paula spoke with warmth about her time on the show and paid tribute to screen partner Jack.

“I have so many friends here and Jack really is great to work with, I love him to bits. It is going to be gut-wrenching. It is safe to say the performances the viewers will be seeing will be real I think.”

Mother to son Arthur, who was born in 2014, Paula is expecting her second child this month.
