FURIOUS holidaymakers have slammed an airline they say treated them "like cattle".

Some 29 travellers have been left stranded in Majorca after Jet2 sent too small an aeroplane to fly them home.

Those left at the airport include a couple in their 80s who were celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary.

The problem comes after Jet2 flight LS189, which left Glasgow for Palma at 7.53am on Thursday morning, was forced to turn back after declaring a mid-air emergency.

The plane, which had 194 passengers and five infants on board, landed safely at 8.30am.

But the aircraft should have collected return passengers from Palma to return them to Glasgow Airport.

Instead, Jet2 sent a plane that was too small to fit all passengers on board - leaving 29 left behind.

Not only that but the airline is not flying the holidaymakers back to Glasgow but is taking them to Manchester - where they will have to get a bus back to Glasgow.

And their troubles do not stop there.

Jet2 loaded all luggage onto the smaller plane - meaning those left behind have no luggage, including one man who is said to need access to medication.

Alison Wilmott, from Helensburgh, said the 29 passengers were livid at not being allowed on the flight.

And Mr and Mrs Smith, from Dennistoun and aged 80 and 83, also said they were "extremely upset" at being left behind.

Alison, 50, said: "We have had hardly any information from Jet2 and no one gives a tuppence ha'penny about our welfare.

"We're being treated like cattle.

"There is a couple here in their 80s who are really distressed and another man who needs medication, which has gone in his luggage.

"I was up before 6am for this flight and now they're telling us we won't be back in Glasgow until after midnight.

"The very least they could do is fly us to our final destination but we have been told we'll be bussed back from Manchester.

"We weren't given any option about who flew back to Glasgow and who stayed behind - they didn't ask for volunteers - so groups have been split up, elderly and vulnerable people have been left behind.

"I don't care for myself but there are people who are distressed at this long wait and it's a shambles."

Alison also said passengers had asked for access to a hotel during the day but were told this was not possible.

She also said each traveller was given 10 Euros for food and drink during their wait.

But the cheapest thing on the menu in the airport cafe is 10.90 Euro.

When Jet2 was contacted for comment they responded to say passengers were on a flight on their way home - but this was not the case for some passengers.

They did not respond to a further request for more information before the Evening Times went to press.

Two other flights were diverted during Thursday morning's runway closure.

A British Airways flight from Heathrow was diverted to Edinburgh while an Easyjet flight from Belfast was diverted to Pretwick.

A spokesman for Glasgow Airport said a replacement aircraft will operate the flight, with an estimated departure time of 11.25am.
