A pensioner who was attacked outside of his home has thanked the public for their fundraising campaign.

William Todd, 84, was left beaten and bruised after the assault near his Govan home.

He was attacked just a few metres from his front door on the same day as the Scottish Cup Final in May.

Thugs pounced on him in Golspie Street as he walked home from the pub.

Following the incident a JustGiving crowdfunding page was set up to raise money to help the pensioner “restore his faith in the human race”.

An initial target of £500 was set but was soon tripled with an incredible £1,735 being donated along with messages of support from across the country.

Willie and his wife Louise have now received the money and are eager to thank everyone for their generosity.

The father-of-seven said: “I haven’t seen any of those who donated but a couple came up to me to give me the money.

“My granddaughter has been keeping in touch with them because I can’t work computers or mobiles.

“I just want to say thank you to everyone who donated. I was quite pleased about what they done and I want to let them know I’m doing alright.”

Since the assault, William has been suffering from headaches and blackouts which have forced him to spend several nights in the hospital with another appointment coming up in the near future.

He added: “Every morning I wake up with a pain across my eyes but they’re not sure what’s causing it.”

With the help of the money donated, the couple are now looking forward to going away for Louise’s 80th birthday later this month.

“It’s our 63rd wedding anniversary in August as well so it’s come at a great time. I’ve been trying to save money to take her away so this will give her a good 80th birthday celebration.

“I think we’re going to go to Blackpool. My granddaughter wants to go Benidorm but I’ve never owned a passport.”

Nearly three months on from the attack, police are yet to make any arrests but are continuing with their inquiries.

Louise believes they may never find the attackers as Willie struggles to remember much about what happened.

She said: “It was the Scottish Cup Final match that day.

“I think they followed him because they pulled him back and stood all over his hands so they were all badly bruised."

As well as his injuries, the pensioner was also robbed of around £60.

The JustGiving page has been inundated with messages of support.

Those behind the page said: "Willie is a gentleman who has a heart condition and who thankfully survived the shock and pain of a severe assault.

"As you can see from the disturbing photo, he was physically attacked and robbed of money in broad daylight in the town he has lived in all his life.

"I hope that this can go a small way to let him know that people do care and want to help him. "
