The opening of two tourist information iHubs has been criticised by a local councillor.

Anderston councillor Nina Baker has described the location of the hubs in Kelvingrove and Gallery of Modern Art as “unsuitable”.

Following the closure of VisitScotland’s information centre on Buchanan Street, the decision was taken by the tourist board to downsize.

Glasgow is the first city to pilot their new scheme which will see information centres re-named iCentres and the introduction of iKnow Scotland VisitScotland Information Partner (VIP) Programme.

Nina, who opposed to the Buchanan Galleries expansion which caused VisitScotland to close their main base on Buchanan Street said: “I don’t think either of the new locations are really suitable but the GoMA is the worst.

“Although technically accessible, it is totally out of sight and for tourists I would think visibility and ease of access is vital. What other world class city, as we aspire to be, would do this?”

The shake up is part of a wider strategy by VisitScotland which puts greater focus on making information more digitally accessible.

As well as using the iHubs and iCentre’s, visitors can now find information online, on an owned forum, through a live web chat and by using a trip planning tool.

Kate Turnbull, press manager at VisitScotland said: “With combined visitor footfall of 1.6 million, these were the perfect locations to get access to the right people at the right time with information.

“In the last decade, we have seen a marked difference in the way visitor’s access information with a move towards digital. We are reacting to that change with a new strategy meaning that there is more information in more places at any one time to suit all customer needs.”

A spokesman for Glasgow Life, said: "We are pleased that visitors to the city can now access information while enjoying two of Scotland's most popular attractions."

This summer a fleet of Coo campervans and VisitScotland will be travelling around the country to providing tourists with inspiration and information on the best events, visitor attractions and tourism hotspots.
