A pro-cannabis rally at Glasgow Green was a washout with only a handful of people bothering to turn up.

The event on Sunday was billed as a huge gathering of activists who are campaigning for legalisation of the Class B drug.

But police said fewer than ten people were there at any one time and a video posted online by Glasgow Cannabis Social Club shows only the organisers at a deserted Glasgow Green.

When it was announced, the so-called ‘community picnic/BBQ’ on July 10 sparked an outcry.

The Scottish Conservatives called on the local authority and police to step in to stop it going ahead.

Glasgow City Council said no one had asked permission to use the park for a pro-cannabis event.

The police offered a reassurance that there would be a crackdown on any criminality.

Similar events held previously in Glasgow had attracted dozens of people and there were reports of several arrests.

More than 600 people indicated on Facebook that they intended to go along to Sunday’s event.

Organisers boasted they had a “massive three kilowatt sound system” and “a whole load of barbecue food”.

They posted footage on Sunday afternoon of gazebos at Glasgow Green and encouraged supporters to come along.

Speaking as the video was shot, one of the organisers said: “We’re at Glasgow Green for the 7/10 barbecue. The weather is looking a wee bit dreich at the moment, hopefully things will improve in the afternoon, from two o’clock onwards.

“We’ve got a massive three kilowatt sound system pumping out some tunes. We’ve got some teas and coffees going on here and we’ve got the hemp dispensary down with a range of drinks for everybody. Also two hundred cookies and there’s a whole load of barbecue food aswell.

“Hope you’re all looking forward to it. See you when you get here.”

But hardly anyone bothered to show up and one post under the video suggested the event was poorly timed.

“Maybe the wrong weekend for it,” Eddie Ayeme wrote. “T in the Park, Homeless World Cup at George Square, Wimbledon final, boxing Joshua v Breazeale, France v Portugal final, and p***ing of rain.”

Several people also posted that they would not be attending, with Daryl Martin adding: “It’s p***in’ it doon.”

A spokesman for Police Scotland said: “Less than ten people were in attendance at any one time. There were no issues and no arrests.”

The Evening Times also contacted Glasgow Cannabis Social Club but no one responded to a request for comment.
