Parents have rallied to try to raise cash to help a primary school plagued by repeated vandal attacks.

The Evening Times told yesterday how St Catherine's Primary has faced an onslaught of vandalism - including fires, broken windows and smashed play equipment.

The Barmulloch school has been under attack for the past year with damage now totally an estimated £100,000.

But parents at the primary have now issued a plea for financial help by setting up a Go Fund Me page.

Nicola Mellon is mum to P6 pupil Baileigh Ronald.

She said: "I set up the crowdfunding page this morning because I wanted to do something to help and people are always very generous in donating to these things.

"What has been happening at the school is a disgrace and it has been going on since last summer.

"We used to have a janitor who lived in a house right in the school grounds but he's moved out and that seems to be when the trouble has started.

"It's a real shame because this is a great school."

Smashed booze bottles and drugs paraphernalia have been found in the playground.

Windows have been smashed, the gazebo set on fire, the bike shed was so badly damaged it was removed, holes were kicked in PVC doors and the PVC doors were melted.

Guttering has been broken off as vandals use it to climb on to the roof and fires have been set in the playground.

Glasgow City Council installed metal grids covering five classroom's windows but these were pulled off the walls, ripping out the PVC frames, and the windows were smashed again.

On June 29 three toilet windows, two windows in the school annex and a stairwell window were smashed.

The garden hut's door lock was broken and the contents vandalised and strewn across the playground.

Only the week before, more windows in the annex were smashed.

Nicola added: "The kids were devastated when the gazebo was set on fire - they used to sit out in it and it gave them some shelter in the playground so they were very upset.

"The PTA had raised the money for the gazebo and for other things for the school that have been trashed.

"When the shed was broken in to the gardening equipment was so badly damaged that you couldn't even tell what some of it was.

"Parents who live near to the school say there are people in there every night playing music and drinking - they only look to be teenagers of about 15 or 16.

"When is it going to stop? We're at the point of asking, 'Will we have a school left to come back to?'"

Headteacher Donna McKay said: "We have been really touched by the recent messages and show of support that the school has received.

"I hope now we that can work together - staff, pupils, Parent Council and the local community - to restore plans for the new term.”
