The Scottish SPCA is appealing for information after a cat left in a cardboard box reading ‘free cat’ in Motherwell.

The animal welfare charity was called to the scene on Sunday July 10 after a member of the public came across the cat.

It has now been taken into the care of the charity’s animal rescue and rehoming centre in Lanarkshire, where she has been named Friday.

She is thought to be around two-years of age and is in good condition.

Centre managed, Peter Fleming said: “Friday was picked up from Greenfield Quadrant in Motherwell.

“She was inside a wet cardboard box that had the words ‘free cat’ and ‘I am a housecat’ written on it. I just don’t understand why someone would abandon her like this.”

The abandoned cat will now be looked after at the centre until they can find her a loving new home.

Abandoning an animal is an offence under the Animal Health and Welfare (Scotland) Act 2006.

Anyone with information is being asked to contact the Scottish SPCA animal helpline on 03000 999 999.
