Scottish charity The Symphony of Dreams made one young boys' dreams come true by taking him to see Rihanna.

Patrick Mckinnon, 10, from Uddingston, is profoundly deaf, bilateral and wears two hearing aids but can still ‘hear’ his favourite singer.

Patrick sent the charity an application describing his musical dream to see Rihanna at her concert in Glasgow last month.

Writing on the application, Patrick’s mum Linda Anne said: “This would be a dream come true for my son who loves and adores Rihanna. He thinks she is ‘very beautiful’ and said if he ever met her one day she would say he was ‘very handsome.”

Despite being profoundly deaf, the 10-year-old can ‘hear’ Rihanna and can identify one of her songs by the intro.

The charity, which aims to use the power of music to transform the lives of people of all ages with life limiting illnesses, disabilities or those living in poverty in Glasgow, managed to get the family tickets for the show after receiving their letter.

Founder Linda Ann McConnell learned sign language especially to share the good news with them.

His dad, Jim Mckinnon said: “When Rihanna arrived on stage, Patrick went absolutely mental! He was dancing and was totally awe-struck that ‘his Rihanna’ was there singing.

“During the song "Umbrella" he started to cry, I asked him what was wrong and he said “No dad, these are happy tears”. This is the first time we have ever heard our son say something like this, everyone takes these things for granted but when your profoundly deaf child expresses himself like that, it is a real wow moment for us as parents. I was crying my eyes out with him at this point.”

“Shortly after a member of the crowd came up to us and handed an official tour t-shirt to us for Patrick. He said, “I've been watching your boy and he deserves this t-shirt more than I do.” Patrick put this on right away and spent the rest of the concert singing and dancing away and didn't even bother too much that she didn't sing his favourite song “What’s My Name.”

The family now hope that their experience will encourage other deaf children to get involved in music and attend concerts.

Linda Ann McConnell, who was an Evening Times Community Champion in 2013 said: “It was a privilege to make Patrick’s dream come true to see the only singer he can ‘hear’.”
