A man who helped salvage the wreckage which inspired Whisky Galore has been honoured by his relatives.

Robert 'Bob' Stewart, an Irishman living in Dalmuir, was sent to recover the SS Politician when he was working as a salvage engineer in the ship yards.

The famous ship inspired the 1947 novel and 1949 film Whisky Galore after it sank off Eriskay on 4 February 1941.

It had been travelling from Liverpool to Jamaica laden with 260,000 bottles of whisky.

Some of Bob's relatives, who still live in West Dunbartonshire, have now loaned a portrait of him to West Dunbartonshire Council’s Heritage Service 74 years after he helped to recover the shipwreck.

Commissioned by his employers Arnott Young, the portrait was painted by Glasgow artist Archibald McGlashan.

It was unveiled by the council's Deputy Provost John Millar at Dalmuir Library, while Dalmuir’s Reading Champion Donny O’Rourke read a commemorative poem.

Mary McDonald, 98, Bob’s only surviving child, was at the event on Tuesday.

She said: “It was wonderful – absolutely fantastic.

"I was quite excited to attend the event and am really proud to think that it’s all for my dad.”

Deputy Provost John Millar said: “I was delighted to officially welcome everyone to this special event. Bob’s story is truly inspiring, and it was wonderful to recognise his extraordinary tale in this way.

I must thank Bob’s family for loaning his much-loved portrait to our Heritage Service to display publicly in West Dunbartonshire for the first time, and I hope as many people as possible will visit Dalmuir Library to find out more about his Whisky Galore adventure."

The painting is to go on display at the library until September 17 2016, while a series of Whisky-galore themed events are also set to be held in the area.

They include free screenings of the Ken Loach film The Angels Share on July 23 and of the 1949 original Whisky Galore on August 6 at the library.
