A TEACHER has been nominated for a prestigious award for being an LGBT role model.
John Naples-Campbell, a teacher at Knightswood Secondary, has been shortlisted at the National Diversity Awards.
He will be in the running for the Positive Role Model for LGBT gong for his work addressing homophobia and LGBTI issues in the classroom.
The openly gay teacher has worked with the Time for Inclusive Education (TIE) campaign, which is calling for all staff in Scotland to be trained to handle lesbian, gay, transgender and bisexual issues in the classroom.
They argue this will help to cut down on homophobia and bullying many gay and transgender pupils face.
John will find out if he was scooped the gong on September 16 at the Anglican Cathedral, Liverpool.
John said: "I am overwhelmed to be nominated for this National Award.
"The work we do in schools is vital to give young people the chance to aspire and attain and I’m proud that the panel has recognised the work teachers are doing across the UK to give our LGBT students a voice.
"As an openly gay teacher it’s important that people realise that we have a rich and vibrant history, make huge contributions to communities and are part of every religion and profession."
