GLASGOW is one of the cheapest cities for student accommodation according to a new survey.

While Edinburgh is the most expensive city in the UK for students, cheaper rents in Glasgow make the city a more affordable option.

The Royal Bank of Scotland survey looked at rents, travel and other costs of living during term time and found Glasgow a far more economic proposition than the capital.

Rents in Edinburgh were higher than the average and higher than in London at £112 per week. Glasgow by comparison was £94 per week and household bills were cheaper too.

Oxford and Cambridge were the highest for student rents at £135 and £131 a week respectively.

Students in Glasgow also had more term time income than counterparts in the capital with cash form part time work, loans and money from parents and family totalling an average of £1169 during term time with Edinburgh students lower at £995.

Students in Glasgow spend a little more than average on alcohol at £8.63 per week second only to Newcastle where they spent £9.32 a week and Edinburgh students spent £7.21 a week on booze.

Clothes shoes and accessories accounted for £796 a week in Glasgow, slightly higher than Edinburgh.

Dan Jones, Royal Bank of Scotland Head of Student Accounts said, “Making the most of University can be expensive and there is a massive difference in the costs students face depending on where they choose to study.”

Not all rents in Glasgow are affordable as those mentioned in the survey.

Earlier this year the Evening Times reported new luxury student flats in the west end on offer for rents of more than £1000 a month.

The flats in North Woodside Road, feature dinner party rooms and a cinema room for residents, but student leaders stating it was out of reach of most students and that despite the boom in private student flats there was a need for affordable suitable accommodation for students.
