A callous lout who blasted loud music at George Square near a memorial days after the fatal bin lorry crash has been caged for more than 10 months.

Jack McGroarty, 20, Troon, South Ayrshire pled guilty at Glasgow Sheriff Court to behaving in a threatening or abusive manner likely to cause a reasonable person to suffer fear or alarm between September 17, 2014 and December 26, 2014.

On December 22, before the bin lorry tragedy McGroarty was seen dancing on the road at Renfield Street, dressed in a Santa suit.

Police later spoke to McGroarty but he refused to co-operate and officers were called away to deal with the tragic bin lorry incident at the time.

Later that night around 9.30pm when police were dealing with the aftermath of the incident, McGroarty was driving up Buchanan Street along the pedestrian precinct and an officer heard him shouting “unknown phrases”.

Defence lawyer Garvey McArdle previously invited the court to look at McGroarty’s medical background after being diagnosed with Asperger Syndrome at a young age.

After reading a psychiatric report and information from McGroarty’s GP the sheriff concluded that he acted in the way he did because he chose to, not because of his condition.
