The grounds of the former Victoria Infirmary in Glasgow’s south side will soon be closed off to the public.

Despite having closed in May this year, the old hospital is commonly used as a car park and short cut for pedestrians.

As told in the Evening Times on Wednesday, social landlord Sanctuary Group have bought the land from NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde to build new homes.

The full 9.5 acre site will be sealed off from 5pm on Wednesday, August 10.

Peter Martin, Group Director Development of Sanctuary Group, said: “The former Victoria Infirmary is now in the hands of our demolition contractor.

“The old hospital’s grounds will be secured to allow disruptive surveys to take place throughout the site.

“Closing off the site keeps the public safe and prevents people from putting themselves in danger.

“We do apologise for any inconvenience it may cause.”

Sanctuary will now begin pre-planning application discussions with the local community and Glasgow City Council.

The not-for-profit housing and care provider plans to retain a number of heritage features while providing modern homes for first-time buyers, families and older buyers.
