An Ayrshire football club has been granted a licence to sell alcohol in the stands during an upcoming derby match.

Junior football team, Irvine Meadow, has been given permission to sell alcohol to supporters on the terraces during their match aagainst local rivals Irvine Vics on Friday, August 19.

The sale of alcohol at professional football grounds during designated matches in Scotland has been illegal since the Scottish Cup final between Rangers and Celtic in 1980.

Alcohol can only be served in corporate hospitality areas of football stadiums.

Irvine Meadow will be able to sell alcohol between 6pm and 9pm at their Meadow Park ground on the evening of the match.

The decision to grant an occasional licence was made after a consultation between the club, Police Scotland and North Ayrshire's licensing board,

Drinks will be sold in plastic glasses in a designated area of the football ground.

North Ayrshire Council said there had been no objections to the application after it was granted earlier this week.
