A landslide on the Highland tourist route has caused major disruption to road and rail services.

Scotrail said that following the landslip at Lochaber between Fort William and Mallaig all lines there were blocked.

Train services between Glasgow Queen Street and Mallaig may be delayed or terminated at and started back from Fort William.

The adjacent A830 road to the isles, a popular route with tourists, was also reported to blocked as a result of the landslide.

The extent of the landslide was illustrated by Edinburgh councillor Stefan Tymkewycz, pictured below, who was stranded.

He tweeted: "Marooned in #Mallaig. Landslide closes rail and road, caused by heavy rain.

"Even locals say more rain than usual."

A Scotrail spokesman said in a statement: "Disruption is expected until the end of the day.

"Replacement road transport services are conveying passengers between Fort William and Mallaig, however road conditions are also subject to change as the day goes on and a diversionary route may have to be used.

"Due to the use of replacement transport, journey times will be extended and passengers should take this into consideration when planning their journey on this route.

"We apologise for the delay to your journey today."
