It reads: “It's with shock, heavy hearts and sadness that we have to let you know the news that Gary sadly passed away this morning as a result of injuries sustained in a tragic accident last night.

“Today was his 22nd birthday. We are lost for words and struggling to process such a tragedy. Gary was a creative force, a man who without his vision this band wouldn't exist. We have lost a friend, a brother, a hero.

“At the moment it doesn't seem real. We send our deepest condolences to Gary's family and would appreciate your respect in allowing them & us some peace whilst we grieve.

“Forever in our hearts, with peace you go.”

Friends, fans and fellow musicians have been paying tribute to the talented young man who began writing songs in his mid-teens, while attending Calderglen High School.

Glasgow's Franz Ferdinand tweeted: "We're so sad to hear of the tragic passing of The Lapelles Gary Watson, a lovely, talented man. Thoughts are with his family, friends & band."

Bradley Ford wrote on Facebook: “I can't believe this news, having played alongside you guys several times I came to respect Gary a lot for his talent and his genuine personality.

“He was an incredible musician and my heart goes out to all of the band and his family in light of this tragedy.”

Oliver Harvey-Ball added: “Saw these guys support The Kooks just a few weeks ago and met the band. Not only did I love their music but they were all such great guys. We've lost a serious talent and I can't even begin to imagine how his family feels.

“Thoughts to his family, the band and friends and to any fans that feel the same way I do.”

Emma Smith wrote: “Rest in peace Gary, you were so talented and it's such a shame the world can't see more of it”

Gary was the lead singer and guitarist in the indie pop band who formed in 2012.

He began writing songs in his mid-teens and was a regular busker at East Kilbride shopping centre.
