A Glasgow MSP is urging his city colleagues to back calls to fast track the City Deal rail link to Glasgow Airport.

Anas Sarwar, Labour MSP has called on MSPs form other parties to support the council leaders from Glasgow and Renfrewshire who want action to start the project now and deliver it two years early.

He has lodged a motion at the Scottish Parliament seeking support in calling for government action.

Last week the Evening Times reported how there was frustration at a perceived unwillingness from within the government to accelerate the process.

Mr Sarwar said the project will create 15,000 construction jobs and another 30,000 permanent jobs though a boost to the local economy

His motion warns that with the vote to leave the EU expected to cause economic decline infrastructure projects like the rail link need to be prioritised to offset the adverse impact.

He said: “Glasgow is the economic powerhouse of Scotland. The economic case for this crucial link is undeniable and it would secure more and better jobs. It will continue to build Glasgow’s identity as a leading City in Europe and a top tourist and conference destination. There is no sound reason why the Scottish Government should not deliver a rail link to Glasgow Airport and I would hope that it will have unanimous support from all of Glasgow’s elected politicians.”

Last week Transport Minister, Humza Yousaf, told the Evening Times the Scottish Government was committed to the City deal and he was speaking to Glasgow Airport and with council leaders but recognised there were challenges with the rail link and all options to solve access problems must be considered.

Mr Sarwar is hoping for Labour, SNP, Conservative and Green MSPs in Glasgow to support his motion.

He said: “Both the First Minister and the Transport Minister are Glasgow MSPs, surely they would support this important and transformative project.

“They have the power to deliver it, they have the support of the local authorities and this project is supported by the public what possible reason could they have not to support it.

“Therefore, I’m calling on all Glasgow MSPs regardless of political affiliation to unite behind this project and back the fast-track of it to give the economic boost this City and Scotland needs.”
