A £4.7 million development is taking shape in Glasgow's South Side.

The Glasgow Housing Association project will see 47 new energy-efficient flats built for social rent at Shawbridge in Pollokshaws.

The area is one of eight earmarked for regeneration by the council, housing association and the Scottish Government in the Transforming Communities: Glasgow scheme.

Two years ago 93 new homes for social rent were built on Riverford Road and, last year, two tenement blocks in Shawbridge Street were fully refurbished as 40 mid-market rent flats.

Five of the new flats are to be built for GHA tenants who are wheelchair users, while the other houses will be for GHA tenants whose homes have been demolished as part of the revamp.

Nearby Loretto Housing are also planning to develop 42 affordable homes in future.

GHA chairman Gordon Sloan said: "We are delighted to be working again with local residents and tenants to bring forward this latest phase of the regeneration of Pollokshaws.

"The work we have already carried out there, with our partners Glasgow City Council and the Scottish Government, has already made a big difference to the area.

"I know how much tenants already living there enjoy their new homes.

"These further new homes will be another piece of the transformation of the area."

Labour councillor George Redmond, chairman of Transforming Communities: Glasgow, said: “I am delighted to see these new homes taking shape in Pollokshaws and this is a key phase in the regeneration of the area.

"What is particularly pleasing about these flats is the range on offer to meet the particular needs of individuals and families, and I look forward to seeing this project when completed.

"This is yet another example of the many high-quality housing developments that are currently being built across Glasgow.”

Shawbridge was built in the 1960s, but its multi-storey blocks, low rise tenements and deck access flats grew unpopular with tenants.

Work to transform part of Pollokshaws began in 2008 when the first of nine multi-storey blocks that had stood there since the 1960s were demolished.

The final block, on Shawbridge Street, came down in March this year.
