Campaigners fear a hospital being considered for closure has had its fate sealed already most of the site has been boarded up.

Patients will find out today if Greater Glasgow Health board proposes to shut Lightburn hospital.

The hospital in the east end of the city, used for stroke rehabilitation, was included in a draft plan for cuts revealed by the Evening Times in June.

The Health Board is meeting today to finalise plans for service changes which will contribute to a multi-million pound savings target.

The proposal is to shut the two 28 bed wards and transfer patients to the Royal Infirmary and Stobhill. Those who do not require in-patient services will be cared for in a “local community facility”.

Campaigners calling for the hospital to be saved fear a decision has already been taken as most of the hospital site has been boarded up.

Lightburn has been at the centre of a political row with labour MSPs claiming there are plans to shut it down despite Nicola Sturgeon when she was health minister promising it would stay open in 2011.

In recent months the current health secretary Shona Robison and Ms Sturgeon have said no proposals to close the hospital have been presented to them for approval.

Gerry McCann a local campaigner is concerned that the health board are already planning for closure.

He said most of the site has been boarded up leaving the hospital looking closed already.

He said: “Local people are already concerned about the future of Lightburn and now they are confused too, as it looks like the hospital is already shut. We’ve heard of people missing essential appointments because the whole site looks closed.

“No decision has yet been made about Lightburn’s future and it is imperative that the Health Board makes it clear that the hospital remains open for business. It’s hard not to be cynical about the Health Board’s consultation when it looks as if Lightburn has been closed before the consultation has even started. That is unacceptable.

Decisions will also be taken on in-patient beds at the Centre for Integrative Care, a pain management and service at Gartnavel Hospital which campaigners argue are essential for many patients.

The health board proposal states: “With limited diagnostics facilities at Lightburn Hospital and medical staff covering a number of hospital sites NHSGGC is unable to provide the level of acute care required to deliver the new models of care.”
