WIMBLEDON wheelchair tennis champion Gordon Reid is to be sponsored by a city property management company as he goes for gold in Rio next month.

Gordon, who is from Alexandria in West Dunbartonshire, won his first grand slam singles wheelchair title at the Australian Open in January and followed that by winning the inaugural singles wheelchair championships at Wimbledon.

He started playing tennis at a young age but contracted a rare neurological condition in 2004 and lost the use of his legs.

He began playing wheelchair tennis the following year and in 2006 was shorlisted for the BBC Young Sports Personality of Year.

At just 16 he represented Great Britain at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing and four years later reached the semi-finals in the men's singles and doubles at London.

Speirs Gumley has now announced it will sponsor the young star as he heads for the Paralympics in Brazil to compete in both the singles and doubles competitions.

The company already works closely with Judy Murray and her Tennis on the Road scheme and with the Elena Baltacha Foundation in a bid to encourage more children from all backgrounds to take up the sport.

Gordon said: "I am honoured to become an ambassador of Speirs Gumley and would like to thank them for their support.

"This helps to take my training and preparation to the next level as I get ready for major competitions and I look forward to working with them over the coming years."

Lorraine MacDonald, owner of Speirs Gumley, said: "I am a tennis fanatic so am thrilled Speirs Gumley is in a position to sponsor Gordon in time for his big trip to Rio.

"He is such an inspiration to everyone who knows him and I know everyone in Scotland will be rooting for him to bring home gold."
