A TEENAGE girl has been told she can’t meet her heroes Union J after a Glasgow venue failed to fix a lift which gives wheelchair users access to their concerts.

Devastated Lauren McEwan and her mum Angela, from Gartcosh, booked tickets last month to see the boyband at Glasgow’s O2 ABC on September 27.

Angela contacted the venue quickly afterwards to arrange a carers ticket for herself to look after 18-year-old Lauren, who has cerebral palsy.

And it was during this exchange she discovered that the gig at the Sauchiehall Street venue would be out-of-bounds for anyone who required wheelchair access.

Angela said: “I opened up this e-mail from the o2 ABC, and it was the words they used.

“It read basically if you can’t walk, don’t come but if you can do the stairs you can get in.

“Since Lauren was born she has been going to shows from the Tweenies to Bob the Builder. It has been fine, we never had any bother.

“We have booked the tickets and now they have sent the e-mail saying the lift isn’t working and won’t be fixed.”

The e-mail which Angela shared with the Evening Times said: “Unfortunately our lift into the venue has broken and will need replaced so there is no access for wheelchair users now.

“If you can walk upstairs then you will still be able to attend however if you need to use a wheelchair then you will not be able to attend.

“We are trying to get the lift fixed as soon as possible but it looks like it will not be fixed/replaced by the end of September.

“We are sorry for any inconvenience this may cause.”

Angela and her husband Alan have had to comfort their daughter who basically “cried herself to sleep” after hearing the news.

Angela said: “She is broken hearted, she cried herself to sleep.

“Lauren’s speech is limited but once you have been in her company a while, you start to tune into what she is saying.

“And she just cried herself to sleep and kept asking why she wasn’t able to go to the show.

“She even said she would climb the stairs herself to see them, it broke my heart telling her.”

Lauren has followed the band since they first launched into the spotlight back in 2012.

After finishing fourth on the X Factor, they went on to release hits including You Got It All and Carry You.

Angela said: “She has loved them since day one and she followed them in the X Factor.

“ She would sit with her dad and vote every week to keep them in.

“She has seen them before but she has not actually met them in person.

“She was due to go to the meet and greet – as I got VIP tickets.”

The family have sent a further e-mail to the venue to see if anything else can be done but they were told in an automated response they would receive a reply within 10 days.

Angela added: “Lauren has cerebral palsy, she can’t walk or do steps.

“I was hurt with the way they answered the e-mail.”
