POLICE have said a fire at a derelict school in North Glasgow was deliberate.

Firefighters spent all night tackling the fire at the old Milton School in Liddesdale Terrace after emergency services were alerted to the blaze before 5pm on Wednesday.

A member of the public called 999 after the building's alarm went off and thick smoke could be seen for miles across the city.

Firefighters tackled the blaze and secured the building up until Thursday morning.

They even used an aerial rescue appliance to spray water from above on the fire.

The school was previously for pupils with additional support needs and Police Scotland have confirmed the fire is being treated as deliberate.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: "Around 5pm on Wednesday, August 24 2016, police were called to a report of a fire at the old Milton School, Liddesdale Terrace, Glasgow.

"Following a joint investigation between police and fire services, the fire is being treated as wilful.

"Nobody was injured during the incident.
