IF anyone knows Rogano, Anne Mentiply knows Rogano.

Anne has been taking up a booth in Glasgow's oldest, and arguably most famous, restaurant every Saturday for nearly 30 years.

Dubbed Lady Anne by the staff, the elegant 70-year-old is one of a clutch of long-standing regular customers who keep coming back for more of the Exchange Place oyster bar's ambience.

Anne and her husband Dougie came in one Saturday afternoon with friends in 1990 and now, almost three decades later, are weekly customers.

"I do remember the first time we came in. It was with my husband's brother's accountant - they had been at the football and I had been shopping," Anne says.

"They thought it would make a nice change to pop in to the Rogano for a glass of Champagne.

"I knew where it was but had never been in. We liked the atmosphere and the whole experience... and that was us.

"It's just quite delightful. Such atmosphere and warmth."

Asked if she has a favourite dish from the menu, after all this time, Rogano manager Ann Patterson chips in to say: "She always has Champagne."

Anne is reminiscing about her times in Rogano as the restaurant launches its Pay By Memory scheme for the month of September.

Anyone who has a photograph or memorabilia of the venue from the past 80 years will be entitled to exchange it for a starter or dessert.

Sales and Marketing Manager Natasha Michie came up with the idea after looking through photographs sent in by customers and former staff members.

She said: "People have such fond members of Rogano and I think it's fairly unusual that customers would send in old photographs and memorabilia for a restaurant.

"But we have all sorts of things sent in to us and they are always amazing to see. So we wanted to come up with a way of finding more of them.

"Rogano always holds a very special place in the heart of customers."

Anne's favourite photograph is of herself and a very special birthday guest...Sir Rod Stewart.

The famous rocker happened to turn up with Anne was celebrating a birthday with two friends she made through Rogano, fellow regulars Lynne Sim and Isobel Gallacher.

She said: "It was my 65th birthday and I was in the third booth when who should walk in but Rod Stewart.

"My friends were saying, 'You're not going to do it, are you?' But how often do you get the chance to speak to Rod Stewart?

"So, I took one of Rogano postcards and I wrote on it, "Dear Rod, it's my 65th birthday today - could I have a photograph with you?'"

Anne describes being nervous as she handed the singer her note but he said he would come to speak to her after his meal - and he kept his promise.

But Sir Rod isn't the only famous face Anne's met. She speaks very highly of TV presenter Ross King and has a memorable story about film star Robert Duvall.

She added: "I was sitting at the bar with a glass of Champagne and who should sit down next to me but Robert Duvall, who was with a lady friend.

"I thought, 'My God, that's Robert Duvall. Just stay calm, just stay calm'.

"I asked him if he would mind very much giving me an autograph. He did it but he immediately turned his back to me. I could tell he just wanted to enjoy his smoked salmon."

As well as the famous faces, Anne remembers dozens upon dozens of staff from through the years.

And she has happy memories - such as the storm-hit Hogmanay when manager Ian Smith arranged a rickshaw to take she and Dougie to the station so they could stay dry.

Anne added: "It's a very special place for us now."

First opened in 1874 as the Bodega Spanish Wine Cellar, Rogano was owned by James Henry Roger and his silent partner Mr Anderson.

In 1935 the restaurant was bought by Donald Grant, who had the venue fitted out in a style similar to the Cunard liner the Queen Mary, which had just been built on the Clyde by John Brown & Co of Clydebank.

Over the last eight decades it has built up a reputation for timeless elegance and style, as well as its famous seafood and Champagne.

Manager Ann said: "As Glasgow's oldest restaurant, Rogano is a Scottish institution and a timeless venue that has seen families and friends visit for generations.

"To celebrate, we are offering diners the chance to 'pay by memory'.

"Anyone who flashes a photograph or memorabilia of Rogano from the past 80 years will receive a starter of dessert for free from our Cafe Rogano menu.

"Running throughout September, we look forward to hearing tales of our customers' special moments - from engagements and annual traditions to dining with Hollywood stars."
