A special collection will be taken up to assist survivors of the quake.

In addition, the Archbishop has written to the Bishops of Ascoli Piceno and Rieti in the dioceses of the stricken territory to express the support and sympathy of the people of Glasgow and beyond to all those affected by the earthquakes.

He wrote: “From the city and the Archdiocese of Glasgow in Scotland, I send you this message of solidarity and support. In prayer I participate in the mourning and the suffering which has struck so many people of your diocese.

“I express my closeness and affection to all involved in this tragedy, especially to the children, young people and the elderly most affected.

“As soon as I heard news of the tragedy, yesterday morning, I offered Mass for the victims. As you will be able to discern from my surname, I too am from an Italian family, and I feel very personally the pain of those who have been afflicted.”

His words come as the devastated families of three Britons killed in the earthquake in central Italy have paid tribute to “the tireless work of the Italian rescue workers and hospital staff”.

Maria and William Henniker-Gotley, aged 51 and 55, and from south London, died after the 6.2 magnitude quake struck in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

Marcos Burnett, 14, was also killed. They were among at least 268 people who lost their lives.

A joint statement from their families issued by the Foreign Office said: “Their families have paid tribute to the tireless work of the Italian rescue workers and hospital staff and expressed their gratitude for the love and support they have received from the Italian people. Their thoughts and prayers are with all those affected by the earthquake.”
