A popular Paisley wine bar was forced to close after a rat popped in for a Rioja.

Our sister paper The Evening Times reported that Saporito Wine Bar, on Old Sneddon Street, shut on August 23 after a rodent appeared in the wine bar.

After an extensive search by pest control experts and environmental health bosses, the watering hole has reopened.

Saporito staff were open about the incident, posting immediately on Facebook to assure customers they had called in environmental health.

On August 23, the wine bar posted: "We had an unfortunate incident today of a rodent coming into the wine bar.

"Our pest control contractors and environmental health were notified immediately and whilst the rodent was caught quickly we have taken the decision to remain closed until we can fully investigate the incident and ensure our premises are 100% secure and free from pests.

"We hope you are understanding and please be reassured that this measure is confirmation of our strict food safety standards."

The following day staff issued an update to say that health bosses had been out again to do a further sweep of the premises.

And the wine bar chose to remain closed for a few days more to ensure there were no vermin.

They wrote on Facebook: "Our pest control contractors and environmental health have reinspected our premises today and done another full search which has shown no signs of entry of vermin.

"We have chosen to re-inspect daily over the next few days to ensure we are entirely satisfied of the absolute absence of any means of entry before we are happy to re-open.

"Thank you again to our understanding customers and be assured food safety is our absolute utmost concern.

"Any guests who have affected bookings are being contacted directly to make alternative arrangements at Saporito High Street."

Saporito finally opened again for business on Friday after environmental health investigators assured owners the rat incident was a one off.

They added online: "We are glad to report that the issue the other day was an isolated incident and no further evidence of a problem on our premises has been found.

"We would also like to thank Renfrewshire Council's Environmental Health Service for their assistance over the last few days and also the patience from you our loyal customers."
