Greenock Morton Football Club has issued a warning about a scam targeting its sponsors.

The club has become aware of the attempted fraud and reported the matter to Police Scotland.

It has also told its sponsors to be alert if contacted about the special brochure.

A statement on the club’s website said: “We are warning our sponsors to be aware of a scam currently in operation where a caller claiming to be acting on behalf of Greenock Morton is selling advertising opportunities in a brochure produced by the club.

“It has been brought to our attention an individual calling himself Paul Williams and representing the ‘Football Business Club’ is targeting our programme sponsors and asking for payment for space in an upcoming publication.

“This is a fraud and does not involve the club in any way. We have reported the highly illegal activity to Police Scotland and ask our supporters and sponsors to be vigilant and contact the club if they are targeted by this fraudulent scheme.
