Shocked bus workers have hit out at bosses after they were told their employment contracts will be outsourced to another firm.

The workers at First Glasgow's Caledonia and Scotstoun depots were told this week their employment contract with the firm will be transferred to The Cordant Group from September 25.

The move effects a pool of staff including shunters, who clean and carry out safety checks on the buses, cleaning staff and vault handers, who deal with the transfer of cash from vehicles to security staff.

One source told the Evening Times, "The main concerns for staff is that there has been no consultation.

"We also believe that changes to our contract cannot be enforced until at least a year but they have already told us that our pay will change from weekly to fortnightly.

"We were also told our holidays will run from January to December instead of April to March.

"The staff feel shafted. There are people who have worked here over 20 years and they can't believe how they have been treated.

"It has been done so quickly and we feel we have no option but to contact employment lawyers."

It is understood that several staff members including a shop steward also quit the trade union Unite upon hearing the news.

A spokesperson for First Glasgow said: “We can confirm that First Glasgow has agreed the transfer of all cleaning and presentation services to a new supplier.

“As a business we are constantly looking at ways to improve the service we provide to our customers. By outsourcing this part of our business, we are confident that the overall presentation and cleanliness of our vehicles will always be to the highest standards.

“We are currently consulting with all affected employees with a view to their employment transferring to the new supplier on September 25.

“We are working in partnership with our Trade Union, Unite, to ensure all affected employees are supported during the transfer.”
