A brave eight-year-old girl from Lenzie will be shaving her head in support of her uncle.

Lucy Stevenson’s uncle George decided to shave his head after being diagnosed with myeloma, a form of blood cancer, last year at just 33-years-old.

To help her be more like her uncle, the schoolgirl decided to cut her hair just like him while raising money to help other people.

Lucy’s GoFundMe page has racked up an impressive £2,560 in just nine days.

As well as asking for donations, the page encourages others to become blood stem cell donors, as there is currently no strong match for George.

Lucy wrote on the page: “My uncle George shaved his head because he thought his medicine would make his hair fall out. I want to be like my uncle George and nothing will ever change that.

“I would really love it if you could please sponsor me to shave my head because I want to look after my uncle George and I love him so much.”

George’s sister, and Lucy’s mother, Melanie, said: “George decided to shave his head as he didn’t want his hair to fall out bit by bit so I told Lucy that her uncle was going into hospital soon and that he had shaved off his hair. Her first question was immediately ‘Does he have cancer?’ and when I told her he did she said she wanted to shave her head too so she could be like him.

“I kept asking her if she was sure she wanted to do it as it is such a brave thing and just a month ago she didn’t even want her hair trimmed at the hairdresser but she is being really proactive about it and encouraging her friends to sponsor her.”

Myeloma is most commonly diagnosed after the age of 65 and is rare in people under the age of 40 to be so the news came as a shock for George, his wife Heather and one-year-old son, Mitchell.

George has already undergone one chemotherapy treatment but is set to receive an even stronger dose in the near future.
