Residents are calling for CCTV cameras to be installed to crack down on firebugs.

Garnethill locals and community council members are demanding action after a spate of blazes in Buccleuch Lane in the last 12 months.

As reported by the Evening Times, the latest incident happened last week when residents' wheelie bins were set alight.

Just a week prior a car was torched in the same location.

It is the fifth incident to happen in around 18 months in the area, and locals now say they need help before someone is seriously injured.

A spokesman for Garnethill Community Council has written to local councillors calling for them to support temporary mobile CCTV around they area.

It is hoped it would deter firebugs from targeting cars and property in the lane.

Bill Beckett, of the community council, said: "I have asked councillors for support in requesting temporary CCTV from community safety Glasgow. I have tried for more than four years to have CCTV in Garnethill but have had no success.

"I think the best way forward would be to have all councillors in the area support the temporary CCTV which could be moved to different locations in the area, and could also be stationary at the most problematic location for three to six months at a time.

" I am determined to help the residents and improve safety in the area. There have been far too many fires and it now needs to stop."

Glasgow City Council has previously said it cannot introduce no-parking signs at Buccleuch Lane as it is a private thoroughfare and needs to be upgraded before they can lay down any markings.

Officials say the state of the ground is not good enough to put down double yellow lines.

Sandra White, SNP MSP for the area, has agreed that CCTV would be a valuable tool in tackling the arsonists.

She said: " I would strongly support CCTV in the area, it's getting ridiculous now and it's a real safety concern.

"Someone could be injured or killed with all these fires, no wonder the residents are worried with this happening increasingly frequently ."

A Glasgow City Council spokesman said: "
