Tesco has announced redundancies and changes to staffing as they end 24-hour store openings in Glasgow.

Glasgow workers face redundancy as the company looks to reduce their late-night staffing and end round-the-clock opening hours.

Tesco at The Forge in Parkhead and Tesco Wishaw Belhaven will see the end of their 24-hour services and changes to 'night-time replenishment' of stock.

Stores in Falkirk and Musselburgh will also see the end of through-the-night services.

All affected stores will see trading begin at 6am and end at midnight.

The supermarket giant previously announced in January that 76 of its stores would be hit by the move.

Tesco told the Evening Times that plans are in place to re-deploy staff who currently work nightshifts.

A spokesman said staff affected by the changes will be supported to find alternative roles, either within the store or within another local store, or they will be forced to chose redundancy.

A number of complaints by people who claim to work for the supermarket have been made on a Very Little Helps forum used by Tesco staff.

One user said: "Full time hours have been cut to 37 hours to 22, or could be a few more hours if enough people take redundancy."

Another said: "No full time hours but night staff will get first dibs on day/twilight hours."

"Anyone that takes redundancy will be offered a temporary Christmas job starting 19th Oct and will receive their redundancy pay after the temporary Christmas job finishes."

Another user said: "I'm a single mum with 2 kids as well. Totally devastated. Used to work on days. Not long went to nights. Can't see me sleeping tonight."

A second wave of job redundancies are expected to be announced this week as the retailer plans to reduce late night staff in stores operating at regular working hours.

149 stores across the UK will be affected by cuts and 30 will have their opening hours reduced from 24-hour services.

A Tesco spokesman: “We’re making some changes in a number of our stores to help us run them more simply and deliver the best possible service for customers. We understand this may be disruptive for some of our colleagues and where there have been changes to a colleague’s role we will be working really hard to ensure they are fully supported.”

The annoucement comes just weeks after the closure of BHS stores in the city resulting in hundreds of redundancies.

Restaurant giant Chiquitos also annouced staff redundancies in Glasgow as two 'underperforming' sites will be closed.

Chiquitos at Springfield Quay in Glasgow and in Hamilton, South Lanarkshire, will be axed in the next few weeks.
