A VIOLENT husband has been caged for almost three years for attacking his wife when she made a remark that “enraged” him.

Stuart Melvin, 39, flew into a rage and grabbed Linda Wilson by the hair and pulled clumps out.

Crazed Melvin told Miss Wilson he was “trying to break her neck” as she pleaded with him to stop.

Eventually the attack stopped when he went into the living room of their Thornliebank home.

His victim left the property later that morning and the matter was reported to police.

Melvin pled guilty at Glasgow Sheriff Court to assaulting Miss Wilson on June 20, this year, to her injury and danger of her life.

Today sheriff John McCormick sentenced Melvin to 32 months in prison for the assault.

The court heard from defence lawyer Neil McCulloch that it was the 16th anniversary of his client’s brother’s murder.

He told the court Melvin was remorseful and it was heard that he told police “I’m sorry”.

Procurator fiscal depute Harry Findlay said that the couple had been together for three years and Melvin has two children from a previous relationship.

Around 4am Melvin was in the living room playing music and singing in flat.

Miss Wilson asked him to turn the music down and stop singing on a number of occasions but he ignored her.

Mr Findlay said: “About 7am the same day, Miss Wilson was lying in her bed, at this time the accused entered the bedroom which woke her up.

They court heard they chatted and Miss Wilson got fed up of hearing a story about his past, when she told him she had heard it before he was “enraged” and attacked her.

He grabbed her by the hair and pulled clumps from her head then put both of his hands around her mouth and nose and put all his weight on her face.

Mr Findlay added: “This action made Miss Wilson struggle for breath and restricted her breathing for 20-30 seconds.

“The accused eventually let go of Miss Wilson around the neck and stated to her ‘I was trying to break your neck’.

“Miss Wilson pleaded with the accused and begged him to let her go.”

She fell off of the bed and on the ground where he dragged her back on lay on top of her, then punched her.

Throughout the attack she pleaded with him to let her go and eventually he stopped and went back into the living room.

She later left and contacted her mum and the police.

Officers took Melvin from his house to the police office where he was cautioned and charged and said “I’m sorry”.
