Noisy council workers kept locals awake until after 2am as they installed new road markings in the middle of the night.

Residents were baffled by the staff's late night working habits and say they were kept up for hours due to the racket.

Roads workers were scorching the tarmac on Byres Road on Sunday night to lay down new lines for new parking bays and loading spaces.

However the work, which didn't start until the evening due to a cycling event in the West End, went on until the early hours of the morning.

The work took place at the bottom end of the popular west end street between Dumbarton Road and University Avenue.

Locals will now be forced to buy a permit to use the spaces, where they had previously been free to park in.

A 54-year-old man who lives on Byres Road next to the works site said: " Yesterday there was some sort of cycling thing on, it was meant to finish at 5. The council kept the road closed and put in parking bays throughout the night. They were there until after 2 in the morning.

As far as I'm aware nobody knew it was happening. I have no idea why they were doing that until 2 o'clock, the noise as ridiculous.

"They were burning in the lines, put in parking bays, loading bays which were not there before and they've put in motorcycle spaces too. It's bizarre."

Jenna Smith, a 29-year-old woman who also lives on Byres Road said: "I was kept up for a good part of the night with the noise.

"I didn't know what it was but then I looked out and I could see there was some sort of work going on.

"This morning when I left my house I noticed all these extra parking slots and marks on the road.

"I had no idea this was coming. They certainly shouldn't have been doing it at that time of night, and on a Sunday when people have to get up for work t he next day."

Locals are also concerned about the new bays and the lack of free parking available in the area, with many previously voicing strong opposition to parking permits being introduced in the area.

The surrounding streets are already a nightmare for those living nearby, with some people saying they are forced to wait up to 4 hours to find a parking space.

A council spokeswoman said: “The works on Byres Road are part of the parking controls for the wider Byres Road and Dowanhill area.

"When these proposed parking controls were publicised, council officers held well attended public exhibitions in Hillhead library.

"Details of the new parking controls are available at www.glasgow.gov.uk/saferparking

“We are now at the stage of implementing the controls which can be a challenging and time consuming process.

"As Byres Road was closed for an event on Sunday, we took the opportunity to do the works after the event ended.

"This reduced costs and minimised disruption to residents by not closing the road twice.

“Unfortunately some of the works can be noisy and the contractor was advised to conclude these particular operations prior to 11pm.

"We apologise that this was not followed and will investigate to ensure it doesn’t happen again.”
