DEMAND for hotel rooms in Glasgow is so high that five new hotels with a total of 1,300 rooms are in the pipeline.

That is on top of the 563 rooms in five hotels which opened recently.

A new city council report reveals hotel occupancy throughout the year has been almost 82% and is expected to soar by almost a third by the end of the year.

The report says: "This has fuelled significant hotel development with a raft of new hotels completed and more hotels planned or underway.

"Together these new hotels will provide an additional 1863 hotel rooms, helping to meet demand created by and large by the success of the Hydro and the tourism and major events sector in general which have established Glasgow as a global entertainment hot-spot."

The report on inward investment in the city over the past year says the decision of the UK to leave the EU in June caused shock waves across the world and created a climate of uncertainty which is not conducive to investment.

It adds: "Policy experts at the Fraser of Allander Institute forecast that over time, investment is likely to be lower as a result of higher long-term interest rates, lower inward investment and slower economic growth as well as the increase in political and economic uncertainty surrounding the UK.

"However, some positives have been highlighted from the post-Brexit effect, notably in the hotel sector where new data suggests an increase of 30% in the number of hotel room nights by the end of 2016 is likely.

"It has been suggested that international travellers will see the weakened pound as an opportunity to book trips to the UK and there will be an increase in the number of British travellers holidaying in the UK."
