A fitness fanatic from Glasgow is has completed her 50th marathon to raise money for charity.

Lucy Mackay, 51, from Mosspark, had never taken part in race before she reached the age of 32 and had two children.

Following the death of her flatmate Kate to cancer, she was inspired to take part in Women’s 10km race in Glasgow in 1997.

Since then, the mum of two who works for Glasgow Life has completed three to five marathons a year and raised money for Marie Curie along the way.

She said: “I’m getting a bit slower as the years go on but I always try and do a few marathons a year.

“I’ll be doing three this year and one in Paris next year which will be my first one abroad.

“I train with Bellahouston Road Runners so we get to run through Bellahouston Park and Pollok park which always makes it more enjoyable because of the beautiful scenery.

“I think running gets quite addictive. I enjoy being able to go out running for hours - it’s quite therapeutic.

“My favourite part is crossing the finish line and the feeling that comes with it.”

For her 50th race, Lucy took on the Loch Ness marathon to raise money for Tools For Solidarity which gives old tools a new lease of life in developing countries.

She said: “My son Brodie worked with them as a volunteer. It’s is a volunteer run development organisation promoting sustainable development and a more just social and economic system by showing solidarity with working people in Africa, supporting local people, especially those with extra support needs.

“It helps them to engage in useful and meaningful work through volunteering and by raising awareness of environmental and developmental issues in schools.

“TFS works to support working people in some of the poorest countries in the world by supplying them with high quality refurbished tools and sewing machines and providing them with the skills to maintain and use these resources - in the struggle to develop bare hands are not enough.”

Despite having incurred an injury last year, Lucy managed to complete the monumental marathon in just over four hours and was greeted at the finish line by her close friends and husband.

She added: “I want to keep doing a few marathons a year. It’s great having the support of the running club and there’s a real sense of community that comes with being a part of it.

“There’s lots of women there who have gotten into running later in life after having children so we’re all doing it together.”
