GLASGOW City Council have revealed plans to upgrade Easterhouse as part of an ambitious 20-year project.

Known as one of the most deprived parts of Glasgow, the area will be transformed with new housing, infrastructure and public space.

A report published on Tuesday, September 27 highlighted the proposals for the Greater Easterhouse area.

Around £400m of public and private sector investment over the past 20 years has been allocated to the area.  Funds have so far went towards building 3000 new homes and the Glasgow Fort shopping centre.

Other projects include 800 homes being built in Garthamlock, with developments in Ruchazie, Barlanark and Stepford Road planned for the future.

Across Greater Easterhouse around 180 hectares of vacant land has been identified which could make way for 6000 new houses, roads, nurseries and schools.

There will be improvements to existing homes, with around 250 properties benefiting from the council's energy efficiency scheme which aims at reducing heating bills for local people and lowering emissions.

The Shandwick Centre in Easterhouse town centre will also be redeveloped.

The Seven Lochs Wetland Park masterplan is another key project in the transformation of Greater Easterhouse.

Included in the plans will be a new heritage and nature park which will include cycling and walking trails plus enhancement and creation of natural habitats.

Councillor Frank McAveety, leader of Glasgow City Council, said: "The plans for the future of Easterhouse are thrilling.

"When complete, the area will be transformed into one that acts as an eastern gateway into Glasgow and a fantastic retail, cultural and leisure destination for visitors from the rest of the city and beyond.

"I look forward to working with our partners to realise this vision of a part of the city that has fantastic potential to exploit its built and natural resources.

"We will build on the successes of recent years to complete the regeneration of Easterhouse to deliver an area of Glasgow that is attractive as a place in which to live, work, invest and visit."
