Two vital services for the elderly are to close their doors today.

The Gatehouse centre in Anniesland, and the Donald Dewar Centre in Yoker will close after more than two decades.

As reported by the Evening Times, the Glasgow Old People's Welfare Association (GOPWA) said it could no longer afford to keep the centres open after they received half of the funding they requested from Glasgow City Council.

The organisation said it had a funding hole of around £180,000 and had no option but to close the two centres.

Clients, staff and relatives of previous attendees said they were saddened to see the places close down.

They previously held a demonstration outside the city chambers to protest against the closures.

Evelyn MacDonald, a 67-year-old from Kelvinbridge said the Gatehouse saved her dad's life when her mum died.

Her dad Robert was a regular visitor for more than eight years, until he passed away.

She said: "It's just a very sad day.

"We had a show last week and there were so many people there, it was nice to see everyone but I feel very sad that it is all happening.

"I think as quite a few other centres have closed in the area too, thee will be nothing left for people. I spoke to quite a few service users on Friday who said they are all very sad.

"For some of them it's just their life. They were very good to them at the centre. It's sad to see all these services being taken away form the older generation."

Sheena Glass, The chief executive at GOPWA, said the charity has helped to find places for all the service users who were at the two centres, either in their own other centres or in the council-run facilities.

"We're very sad that it is happening but it's a new beginning and we just have to get on with it.

"REveryone has got a place and some of the staff have already got jobs so it's turning out really quite good.

" Some of the service users have places in high care centres run by the council, and they've all got places now.

" The other ones who need low-level care are coming to our centre at Fred Paton.

"We have been trialling it out all week and it has been working well.

" It's one of these things. People will be happy they have a place to go. The council are doing a lot to help us to get it sorted now too.

"It's just sad to see people go who you have worked with all this time."
