Dozens of war veterans took part in an annual sports day at a Glasgow school.

Elderly veterans have been in training for months for the Sporting Games, which was held on Saturday at The High School of Glasgow.

Charity Erskine, which hosted the Erskine Commonwealth Games in 2014 and the Sporting Senior Games in 2015, organised this year's day of fun and competition.

The pensioners from each of the charity's four care homes joined other care home residents from West Lothian, Ayrshire and Midlothian.

Nine teams competed in six sports - basketball, boccia bowls, javelin, penalty shoot outs, curling and cycling.

All contestants received rosettes for taking part, with gold, silver and bronze medals being handed out to the winners.

For the first time, the winners also received the John Bowman Trophy, names after an Erskine resident who died earlier this year and was a huge fan of the games.

Army veteran John, originally from Clydebank, was described as having "an inspirational spirit and zest for life" by Erskine staff.

As a keen cyclist in his younger years, John took part in every sporting activity on offer at Erskine.

Erskine’s Head Physiotherapist Janet Leith said: “After holding two very successful Sporting Events, we felt it was really important to hold games this year as part of our Centenary celebrations. Our residents have been in training for the individual events and competition to be selected for the teams is intense. We are passionate about promoting exercise and physical activity for all our residents as it contributes to promoting and maintaining their health and quality of life.”
