Historic gates at a Glasgow park are to receive a £69,000 makeover.

Glasgow City Council is spending the cash to revamp the pillars and gates at two entrances to Queen's Park.

The south side greenspace will also see the introduction of a new outdoor gym as part of the upgrade.

Elaine McDougall, the council’s Executive Member for Transport, Environment and Sustainability, said: “Queen's Park is one of the city’s much loved and popular parks and this investment by the council and the Friends of Queen's Park to renovate the entrances and bring them back to their former glory is wonderful news.

"Not only will the entrances to the park be returned to first class condition, park users will also be able to take up personal exercise in pursuit of first class health.”

Pillars and gates at two park entrances are to be repaired - those at the Pollokshaws Road/Balvicar Street entrance and a second set at Balvicar Street.

The cast iron Balvicar Street gates were built to an original pattern at Glasgow’s George Smith Foundry.

Original remnants will be repaired and restored and missing sections replaced in order to restore the entrance to its former glory.

The original gates at Balvicar Drive are substantially incomplete but will be replaced with a heritage facsimile and the railings around them – extending 300 metres - fully refurbished.

In 2014 the historic Queen's Park gates on Victoria Road were also refurbished.

The proposed outdoor gym equipment will be installed at the north end of the park near Pollokshaws Road following the completion of Scottish Water’s works.

Park users will benefit from five pieces of gym equipment - including a lateral pull and chest press, a ski stepper, a push hands, a rower and an air walker.

Installing the gym will mean the removal of swings but there are alternative play facilities at Balvicar Street.

Local councillor Soryia Siddique said: "Queen's Park is an asset in the south side and frequented by many local residents.

"I welcome the upgrade of the entrance gates to their ornate feature.

"I am also delighted that the local residents' aspirations for an outdoor gym are being fulfilled."
