A contract worth more than £36million has been awarded to allow the transformation of the Sighthill area of the city.

The city council approved the massive award to Morgan Sindall Construction and Infrastructure who will build roads, earthworks, utilities, drainage, landscaping and public realm.

Work, which will begin next month and be completed early in 2019, will also result in improved green spaces throughout the Sighthill area with upgraded wildlife habitats in Sighthill Park.

There will also be new cycling paths giving the area the status of a "cycling village" with priority given to pedestrians and cyclists.

The transformation of Sighthill will create a new neighbourhood with around 800 new, high-quality homes for sale and rent, a new community school campus and bridge across the M8 to connect Sighthill to the city centre.

There will also be a new road bridge across the railway to link the area to Port Dundas and improved parkland, allotments and public spaces.

City council leader Frank McAveety said: "It is great to see the regeneration of Sighthill - the biggest such project in the UK outside of London - progressing so well.

"Shortly after the turn of the decade, we will see the completion of all of this work, with fantastic new homes and a new school campus set in a green environment featuring new bridges connecting the community to the city centre and surrounding neighbourhoods.

"The regeneration will unlock the potential of Sighthill as it becomes an eco-friendly neighbourhood, one that is effectively on the doorstep of Glasgow city centre."
