POLICE have named a woman who died after the car she was travelling in crashed into a tree.

Ashley King, from Kilbirnie, was the passenger in a grey Seat Ibiza which was travelling on the A760 westbound towards Largs at around 8.35am on Wednesday.

The car mounted a grass verge close to Blair Park Farm and collided with a tree. Another woman was driving at the time of the crash.

A number of drivers who were passing by stopped to assist and contacted emergency services.

The 21-year-old woman who was driving the vehicle was taken to the Inverclyde Royal Hospital where she was released after receiving treatment for minor injuries.

Ashley was also taken to Inverclyde Royal Hospital to receive treatment for serious injuries, however, she subsequently died of those injuries within hospital later that evening.

Enquiries into the road crash are continuing.

Sergeant Ian Thornton, of the Divisional Road Policing Unit for Ayrshire, said: “Enquiries are ongoing into the circumstances surrounding this collision and I would ask anyone who may have witnessed the collision or the grey Seat Ibiza being driven on the A760, to contact the Divisional Road Policing Unit at Irvine via the police non-emergency number 101.”
