The mother of tragic Clydebank teenager Paige Doherty has asked for the public to respect the 27-year jail term given to killer John Leathem as demands for a longer penalty intensify.

Deli shop owner John Leathem was sentenced to a minimum of 27 years without parole at the High Court in Glasgow yesterday.

Pamela Munro has urged the public not to criticise the sentence handed down by judge Lady Rae and said '50 years won't bring Paige back and neither will the death penalty'.

Demands for a harsher sentence and the death penalty to be reinstated intensified after the judge delivered the verdict.

In a public post on support group Pout For Paige she wrote: "I know some people don't agree with the sentence given because we are thinking with our hearts and not our heads."

"As a family we are satisfied the right sentence was given by an outstanding judge."

"50 years won't being Paige back, neither will the death penalty, so please don't let it anger you."

"Justice for Paige has been served."

Pamela thanked the public for their support throughout the trial but confirmed her family were satisfied that justice had been served.

She also praised judge Lady Rae for sentencing her daughter's killer to a lengthy prison term.

John Leathem, 32, will be 59 years old before he can be considered for parole.

In court, the judge described Paige as a 'defenceless child' who was killed in a 'savage and frenzied attack'.

She said Leathem had inflicted a 'horrific level of violence' on the teenager and then 'attempted to cover up his actions'.

Screams from relatives of the teenager rang out in the courtroom as the Clydebank murderer was led away from the dock.

Speaking outside the court, Pamela said: "Today we see a monster put behind bars for the unthinkable, brutal crime he committed against our beautiful daughter Paige."

"There is no sentence high enough to justify what has happened but there is now one less evil man in this world which makes it a safer place."

"Paige is now safe and can finally rest now justice has been served to a high standard."

15-year-old Paige was brutally murdered by shop owner John Leathem in the back office of his shop, Delicious Deli, in Clydebank on March 19.

The teenager had gone into Leathem's shop to buy a roll when the horrific attack took place.

CCTV footage shown to the court last month showed Paige entering the shop.

It later captured Leathem carrying her body inside a bin bag to his car before reopening his shop and continuing to serve customers just one hour later.

Footage also showed him leaving to purchase anti-bacterial wipes, bin bags and bleach from a neighbouring newsagent.

He is understood to have kept her body in his garden shed for two days before he dumped it on Great Western Road on March 21.

A post-mortem examination found Paige suffered 61 stab wounds and a further 85 cuts as she tried to fight off Leathem during the sustained attack.

Friends and family have now changed the the #PoutForPaige hashtag to #NoRoomForEvil and #RememberedWithASmile after her mother requested she wanted her daughter to be remembered with a smile.
